Yesterday was my appointment at the CDC. I thought that I might just "talk" with a nurse about which vaccines I might need, and develop a plan for when to get them. I was a little surprised to find out how many different vaccines were "recommended for all travelers" going to Ethiopia; although I was also relieved that some of the scary-sounding things (yellow fever, malaria) are not considered to exist in Addis Ababa, where we will be going.
Considering my personal situation (which is that I am not on birth control) we decided to start all immunizations right away. Some of the vaccines are administered at three different times over the course of six months, so we figured if I do get pregnant soon, at least I have some protection versus none. The nurse said it would be okay for me to get pregnant - even with all the drugs flowing through my blood right now - but I will probably check with my OB as well.
Here is a list of the different vaccines I received - six in all (four shots and one oral):
Meningitis
Typhoid (oral)
Polio (booster)
Hepatitis A and B (combined into one shot)
Tetanus (booster)
My arms are a little sore from where the shots went directly into the muscle, but other than that I haven't noticed any side-effects - not that I would notice since I've had such a nasty cold lately.
